In this magical YA historical fantasy, Ailis and Paddy Kilpatrick, brother and sister, are caught up in the 1920's Irish war for independence. People they love and know are dying, suffering, fighting, and starving. Against all odds and with a little help from the Fae, faery folk, the war might yet be won and the British driven back across the sea.Only a few chapters in, I began to dream of faeries and that's something. George MacDonald's Phantastes was less interesting to me. This best-selling author stirred my imagination and sense of wonder. The Fae do not give assistance easily. The fairies in this story are not your light-hearted Tinker Bell variety and there is a darkness to them.D.L. Garnder's Thread of a Spider was a pleasure to read - most of all because the author celebrates love of country, family, friendship, courage, sacrifice, and honor. Traditional values - in other words. And those are rare treasures, today.Other recent good reads include Morgan Smith's A Spell in the Country, S. A. Gibson's Feeling A Way, and Valerie Lioudis' zombie thriller, Aftershock.

I have read several of the author's books and have been impressed with the way she describes scenes. I was not disappointed in this one. I know very little of the Irish Rebellion, which this story revolves around, so it was an education that some of these things happened as she says in the Appendix. But so much better to wrap legends of faeiries into the the human battle. It was a great story, kept me interested, and reading. I loved the description of the faeiries and their world.

This is a great book...the type you can't put down, even though it's well past midnight! D.L. does a very nice job of weaving together a story that is part history and part fantasy. The main characters are people you want to know! They're brave, honorable and true to each other. This is the first book I've read by this author, but it won't be the last. A very good story!

Such good descriptive writing, I felt as though I was there. Really enjoyed this one and hoping for another. The story drew me in and held me to the end. Definitely recommend!

Dianne Gardner has spun a fine tale in her novel, Thread of a Spider. The plot intricately blends the fairy world with the human world where the Irish conflict with the British sends two Irish teens into the intrigues of war. Danger, bravery, and betrayal are entangled in a web of magic and deceit that kept me enthralled to the end. I highly recommend Dianne’s entertaining story.

This story is okay. The Characters and the plot are okay.

You can tell when a young adult historical fantasy is something that sprung from someone's imagination without a shred of research done to back up any facts. It lies there flat with the reader crawling through so much flimsy voile and cheesecloth dotted with glittery fairy wings that are as prevalent as Disney princesses and do just as much for my gag reflex. So much has been written or drawn with gossamer faeries flitting about that it makes me feel the same way as if a gnat flew up my nose. Not so with Thread of a Spider. This tale spews action throughout based upon actual battles, actual Gaelic lore and actual places. It draws you into the loyal loving relationships that is all that warms the poor characters on the cold damp landscape. The chapters are short so easy to chug a few down between lunch break bites or before bedtime. Fair warning that if you read before falling asleep as you may find it difficult. My adrenaline spiked a few times when the Black and Tan got too far up in their faces and I feared that our heroes, Paddy Ailise and Danny were goners. As for the Fae folk, they are as real as the humans and not a Tinkerbell among them. These Irish youth in the 1920's held tight their freedom as William Wallace once did just before 1300 for Scotland. I have read every one of D.L.Gardner's books and I anxiously await the next one. Yes, they're that good.

*I received a copy from the author for review. This in no way affects my review*I found out about this magical story from Facebook when the author was searching for reviewers. Being new to this author, and having never heard of this book, I was intrigued and gladly agreed. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it far surpassed anything I could have imagined from the blurb. While it sounds interesting, it's the writing style and characters the I love. The characters are not only Irish but are written in such a way that they come to life, and I'm so glad I got the chance to listen to this on audio. What a magical experience! I loved how they were portrayed, and their deep sense of traditional values, friends, family, and what it means to be Irish. The Far, or faery folk, were a treat all to themselves! Not the fairies we think of from Disney, but the darker, more traditional version. Full of tricks and deceptions, yet willing to help for the right price. I loved the fantasy side of this story, but more so because D.L. Gardner wrote both a wonderful historical fiction and a magical tale, which combined seamlessly into this treasure! Not only did Alias and Paddy seem real, but I could also easily imagine faery folk as real as any human! The descriptions are rich and detailed, making it easy to play out like a movie as I listened. This is one you definitely don't want to miss!
